SURF

Se piensa que los orígenes vienen de Perú y Bolivia, pero debido a la falta de documentos es difícil de poner fecha a los orígenes del Surf, pero existen testimonios de antiguos viajeros Europeos.

A finales del siglo 15 el Jesuita Español Fray José De Acosta relata en sus escritos, de la existencia de un grupo de indígenas deslizándose sobre la superficie del agua con una embarcación denominada Caballito de totora, construida con tallos y hojas.  Dicha embarcación se utilizaba para las faenas de pesca, con la cual remontaban las olas para regresar a la orilla con la pesca del día.

200 Años más tarde el navegante, cartógrafo, explorador y Capitán de la Marina Real Británica James Cook aparece en la Bahía de Kealakekua, Hawaii.

Gracias a esta expedición y los escritos del Capitán James Cook tenemos conocimiento de que la nobleza nativa de Hawaii practicaban el He´e nalu (deslizamiento sobre las olas). Cuando decimos la nobleza nativa, es porque solo los que tenían cierta reputación de clase alta eran los únicos que podían surfear en las playas, ya que las clases bajas no tenían permitido surfear. Así como el líder de los indígenas denominado Kahuna, poseía la mejor tabla elaborada con la madera del mejor árbol.

Con la llegada de los misioneros a Hawaii, durante los siglos XIX y XX el Surf como tal, fue prohibido junto a otras muchas costumbres.

A principios del siglo XX los descendientes de los antiguos Reyes, junto al que se considera el padre del Surf moderno y también campeón Olímpico de natación Duke Kahanamoku, retoman esta disciplina y la dan a conocer por el mundo mediante exhibiciones, charlas y demás.

Como curiosidad y según dice la historia el 14 de junio de 1925, mientras vivía en Newport Beach, California, Kahanamoku rescató a ocho hombres de un barco pesquero que volcó ante el fuerte oleaje al intentar acceder al puerto de la ciudad. Veintinueve pescadores cayeron al agua, diecisiete de los cuales fallecieron. Con la ayuda de su tabla de surf, fue capaz de ir y volver rápidamente a la orilla, aumentando el número de víctimas rescatadas. Otros dos surfistas salvaron a cuatro pescadores más. El jefe de policía de Newport en aquel momento, calificó los esfuerzos de Duke como “el rescate más sobrehumano con una tabla de surf jamás contemplado por el mundo”. De este modo nació la tradición por la que los socorristas siempre tienen listas tablas de surf para sus rescates.

En la década de los 30 el Surf se populariza a lo largo de la costa de California y es entonces cuando se empiezan hacer campeonatos, se ven mejoras en las tablas y salen al mercado las primeras revistas…

Sobre los Años 1939 y 1945, por culpa de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se paraliza un poco la rueda que había empezado a girar en los años 30. No obstante sirvió para darse a conocer entre los marineros que llegaban a Hawaii y de la misma manera añadiendo materiales nuevos a esta disciplina.

Es en los años 60 cuando se introduce la cultura musical y cinematográfica en este mundo dándole muchísima visibilidad a nivel mundial. Pero no es hasta los años 70 cuando se populariza en Europa y se empiezan hacer, grandes campeonatos, aparecen las grandes marcas y los grandes surfistas. Es en esta década cuando se fabrica el primer traje de neopreno y nacen los primeros fabricantes de tablas de Surf por sur de Europa (Francia y España), Estados Unidos y Australia.

Actualmente siguen quedando puristas que fabrican y surfean tablas de Acacia, Balsa, paulownia, Ishipingo y caoba. Pero también ha evolucionado de tal manera, que hoy en día, gracias a la tecnología e ingeniería Vasca se puede surfear una ola artificial en Austin Texas entre otras.
